Pengertian Past Future Tense
Past future merupakan satu di antara 16 bentuk tenses dalam bahasa Inggris. Jenis tense ini menyatakan bahwa sebuah aksi atau peristiwa terjadi di masa depan, namun pembicaraan berada dalam bingkai waktu masa lalu. Tense ini kerap digunakan dalam report text.
Simple past future memiliki berbagai fungsi, antara lain:
- Mengungkapkan sebuah aksi yang hendak dilakukan secara sukarela
Contoh: I hope he would be able to join the party.
Kalimat tersebut menggunakan ‘would’ sebagai bentuk past future, namun fungsinya adalah untuk menunjukkan kerelaan.
- Menunjukkan aksi yang telah direncanakan
Contoh: I thought they were going to go to Singapore.
Dari contoh tersebut, were going to menunjukkan past future sekaligus sesuatu yang telah direncanakan sebelumnya.
- Membuat janji
Contoh: He promised that he would never leave me.
Would pada kalimat tersebut berfungsi untuk menyatakan janji yang diungkapkan di masa lampau.
Rumus Past Future Tense
Seperti halnya bentuk simple future tense, past future juga dapat dibentuk dengan dua cara.
Pertama, dengan menggunakan would dan diikuti oleh bare infinitive.
Sedangkan bentuk kedua menggunakan be (was/were) going to dan diikuti oleh infinitive.

Would + subject + verb-1 (bare infinitive)

Kalimat aktif dengan bentuk kata kerja simple past future umumnya dapat diubah menjadi kalimat pasif.
Bagian yang mengalami perubahan hanyalah bare infinitive, yaitu menjadi be + past participle. Sedangkan would dan was/were going to tetap.
